An Artist’s Small Business Dream Becomes a Reality for Other Local Artists

December 13, 2024

As a local crafter, Katelyn Murphy grew weary of traveling well over two hours to sell her wares.

Seeing a need in the market and hoping to tap into the region’s growing creative economy, Katelyn took matters into her own hands and started a business for artists like herself. Just a few months after opening, The Handcrafted Artisanal Marketplace (HAM) on Airport Road already has over 70 vendors.

The unique gift store located next to Legends Grille & Sports Bar is a place where artists can either rent space or sell their items on a consignment basis. Products include jewelry, soaps, lotion, body oils, plushy animals and crocheted items. Katelyn said her goal is to host 100 crafters. “There is a huge boost in the creative arts currently,’ Katelyn said. “There are a lot of crafters and people doing art, but not a lot of places to display that. This is a place where people can display it and sell their products.”

A crafter by trade, this is Katelyn’s first business. To help her get started, Katelyn participated in NewVue’s Small Business Technical Assistance program to develop a business plan and financial projections, which allowed her to obtain a loan. Katelyn said the team walked her through the process, giving her the confidence to move forward with her business.

NewVue Small Business Developer Sarah Tavitan said Katelyn is just one of many women-owned businesses popping up on the region.

“Women are increasingly empowered to pursue entrepreneurial ventures as a result of changing societal attitudes that support female leadership,’’ according to Sarah. “Many women are also drawn to entrepreneurship because it offers flexibility when balancing family responsibilities and work. The rise of remote work and digital platforms has made it easier for women to run businesses from home and create flexible business models that fit their lifestyle.’’

Over the next few months, we plan to share more success stories from our local women entrepreneurs. Please keep an eye on our social media and website for the latest updates.

The HAM is located at 68 Airport Road. It’s open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
